Restaurants

To dine - with our or our guests recommendations :-)

We only include restaurants which we have tried or which are recommended by guests or people we know. In addition there are many, many restaurants, osterias, cafe’s with kitchen (cucina) etc…

In addition, we recommend exploring! In the Langhe you will find very nice experiences if you depart from the “beaten tourist tracks”. If you walk or drive by a small place looking a bit “not-so-impressive”, you might be surprised by both the athmosphere, the excellent food and the affordable prices when you get inside. No problem at all if you do not speak Italian :-). Please respect the restaurants´ time, effort and planning and book a table! Drop-in at lunch can work, but we always recommend to book a table for dinner.

The closest restaurants are:

Agriturismo San Martino (www.sanmartinolanghe.it/en/home): On the way to Clavesana from Ferrarotti, 5 minutes by car. Impossible to miss as the entrance is only a couple of meters from the road. Very well worth a visit :-) Food is excellent and the service too. They speak english.

Il Palazzetto. Borgata Palazzetto 18. On the way to Clavesana 5 min. by car, just keep going straight ahead instead of turning right when you pass Agriturismo San Martino. Telephone 0173 790381/333 4285896. On fridays they have a “pizza evening” which is very poplular (make a reservation). Nice restaurant in an authentic courtyard.

Al Castello, Ciglie (www.ristorantealcastellociglie.it/it/ and facebook): About 5 minutes by car or 15 minutes by bike. Local Piedmontese food in a rustic and authentic Ristorante. Fantastic view from the terrace. Very friendly chef/owner with an impressive knowledge of the local wines and a huge wine list. Good food! And it is no problem to dine with children. On clear days you can see the Alps and the sunset is magnificent!

La Lobia Dla Langa, 0174 785018. Very small, family run restaurant in Rocca Ciglie (4,7 of 5 in reviews on Google). Open in weekends. Recommended!

Ristorante Moderno in Carrü (www.facebook.com/RistoranteModerno/). If you want to try local traditional dishes where they use almost all parts of the ox, try the Bollito Misto. You will not leave hungry.

Baladin Open Garden Birreria in Piozzo. Beer sold all over the world with its origin in the small town Piozzo, very good food, fantastic atmosphere and happenings throughout the year. Summer parties happen :-). You can also visit the brewery.

Vegan food

Il Cardo e l’Ortica - a culinary pleasure :-)

Il Cardo e l'Ortica. We have dined here several times. Fantastic. Vegans will love it and the meat eaters will not miss meat at all, https://ilcardoelortica.com. It is a 20 - 30 minutes drive from Ferrarotti, really worth it.

For vegan food we would also like to recommend lunch at Ninføød in Cuneo (www.facebook.com/Ninfoodristorante/). It has changed opening hours a couple of times, so check before you go.

Restaurants / osterias in nearby villages:

Farigliano:

  • Agriturismo Pianbosco in Farigliano, http://www.cascinarevelli.it/ Piedmontese specialities served in the Piedmontese way :-). Set menu - and many dishes. Not expensive at all.

  • La Speranza, very good restaurant worth a visit, see more on Facebook.

Murazzano (15 minutes by car):

  • Da Lele, http://www.trattoriadalele.it, a family run restaurant that serve Piedmontese food in the Piedmontese way: lots of dishes served until you you say “no thanks, I cannot take anymore” :-). The menu is set, the food is excellent and the athmosphere is not “touristic”.

  • Osteria Ra Ca' 'D Baruc, 335 694 2189. Also a very good place to dine if you want piedmontese food.

  • Murazzano Penta, Facebook.

Belvedere Langhe:

  • Trattoria del Peso, set menu, have a look here. Very popular, we recommend that you reserve.

  • Number 10. Wine bar and shop/restaurant - homemade sourdough bread daily, piemontese salami, cheese etc etc http://number10.it/wine-bar Now also restaurant open during the week-end. Check their website.

Cissone:

  • Locanda dell´Arco. Higly recommended restaurant. Local piemontese specialities, but with a creative and innovative touch. The people in the kitchen are young and the food is modern even if the building has an authentic and warm atmosphere.

Serravalle Langhe:

  • Trattoria la Coccinella This restaurant is a perfect place to go to celebrate or just to give yourself a special treat. It is not a restaurant to go with small children or children who just want to eat pizza! The menu is changed according to the season and it is a bit more expencive than some of the other restaurants on our list. Highly recommended.

Vicoforte:

Bossolasco:

  • Drogheria di Langa. Fantastic interior and delicious Piedmontese food. Shop with local/Italian foods - pasta, olive oil, balsamico, wine etc etc. https://www.drogheriadilanga.it

  • la Piazzetta winebar. Just across the street from Drogheria di Langa. The interior is amazing - highly recommended! See their Instagram account: la_piazzetta_vinoteca Next door is the most amazing shop with home interior, mens clothes and exclusive wines! You need to check it out!

Drogheria di Langa, Bossolasco

In Cuneo

In Cuneo you will find many very good restaurants in Via Dronero and the surrounding area. And elsewhere…

For vegan food we can recommend lunch at Ninføød (www.facebook.com/Ninfoodristorante/). Small and popular, best to reserve a table well in time.

For seafood try In Bocca all'Amo.

We also absolutely love Il Barachin which is a small bar/special cheese/ham/salami shop. Take an aperitivo here! Fantastic selection of local cheeses/ham/salami and wine etc. The owner also makes really nice gifts from the local specialities. She is on Facebook. See Il Barachin. Via Dronero 2, Cuneo.

There are just too many good restaurants in Cuneo… We lots of recommendations, depending on what you would like to do and eat. Please ask. Cuneo is a 45 minutes drive from Ferrarotti. Tuesday is Market day and you can easily spend a whole day in the city. Very good for shopping.

In Barolo region

La Salita in Monforte d’Alba, https://www.lasalita.it/. Tiny entrance are and not very impressive from the outside, but inside! You walk by the kitchen and the chef to enter a beautiful dining area. Excellent place, excellent food and very good wines. We cannot imagine that you would be disappointed!

Ristorante le torri, https://www.ristoranteletorri.it. In Castiglione Falletto.

Vineyards and wine

Cascina Ferrarotti is a part of the Dogliani winedistrict. This district is famous for the Dolcetto wines. This wine is not as famous as the Nebbiolo wines from Barolo and Barbaresco or the Barbera, but there is a lot of very good Dolcetto wine from this area. So try it, especially if you have not tried it before. This wine goes very well with light dishes like pasta, pizza or just to drink without food. The grapes in our vineyard is a Dolcetto. The wine from the Dolcetto vineyards around the house is made by our neighbor Secondo and Teresina Ferrua. The vines to the right - seen from the front of the house - is basis for the Frairot wine. If you would like a visit at their farm to learn about winemaking and taste the wine - please ask. The Ferrua family farm “Bozzola” is just a short walk from Ferrarotti. They are the sweetest people but they speak only Italian.

This area also produce some excellent white wines - the Arneis, Favorita and also the Nas-cetta. Also more famous white grapes like Chardonnay and Riesling is used here and produce really good white wines from the area.

Cantina Clavesana: The local cooperative where more than 200 local vineyards deliver grapes for wine production. They have a big selection of wines from a variety of red and white grapes. Open from 08.00 to 12.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00. Also open on Sunday. https://www.inclavesana.it/

Anna Maria Abbona: ( https://www.annamariaabbona.it and facebook): Fifth generation local winemaker producing award-winning wines. She offers a very nice collection of wines from a variety of grapes. The vineyard is open every day and they can serve a light lunch combined with the wine tasting, make a reservation. The price depends on how many wines you try and if you also want to take the light lunch with the tasting. Their winery is about 10 minutes away by car and a little more by e-bike. We get very good feedback from our guests both regarding the wine and the hosts. Anna Maria and her husband and two sons have developed the vineyard to a level where they get international attention - and prizes - for their wines. The sommelier working with the winetasting speaks well English in addition to Italian.

Stra: or in full Azienda Agricola Stra in Novello (https://www.aziendaagricolastra.it). As they say “Great wines from the Barolo Langhe”, which is absolutely right. One of our favourite producers, both because of their excellent wines, but also because of the fantastic atmosphere and people there :-)

Brangero. Beautiful situated vineyard with good wine and very competent / nice owners and fantastic views. Both red and white wine. Localized just outside the border of Barolo, but no difference in quality vs Barolo wines :-). They also have a vineyard in Liguria where they produce a white wine from Pigato grapes. Really good white wine that goes well with fish and shellfish, or just a dry white wine for “the summer at the terrasse” wine. We like it! https://www.brangero.com/

Just a 5 minutes drive or 20 minutes walk from our house is also the Bricco del Cucu Azienda Agricola Bricco del Cucù. This is a very nice and authentic place where you can get a home-made Italian lunch while tasting the different wines they make. They often arrange a round-trip with information about the work in the vineyard and in the cantina (production premises). Irene takes very good care of the guests and also speaks very good English. They are working in the vineyard during the week and receive guests primarily in the weekends, so check their website of the possibility and prices. There are many, many other opportunities for visiting family run vineyards in the vicinity of Ferrarotti - and not least in the famous wine districts Barolo and Barbaresco. You can choose to visit the large and professional wine producers or the small and lesser known ones - still producing high quality wine from local, piedmontese grapes or from grapes grown internationally. Many have good internet-sites also in English.

The Barolo and Barbaresco wines market themselves, so we will not make an extensive list of those. You can find a lot of recommendations from several wine experts and wineshops. But we will name a couple of them because we love their wine, and perhaps they are not situated on the main road..

Barolo

The list is endless so you just go and taste and make your own favourites. But if you ask us, we have tried some of them and we have some favourites (that will probably be a long list as the years go by). Beware that two of the producers we have spoken of before, Anna Maria Abbona and Azienda Agricola Stra have really good Barolo wines. Stra is located in Novello which is one of the comunes that is within the Barolo area. Anna Maria also has vineyard and production within the Barolo wine districts. We recommend them both!

In Monforte d´Alba we have been tasting the wines of Podere Ruggeri Corsini. This is one of the producers that don´t have a family connection from several generations. http://www.ruggericorsini.it/about Go to their web-site and read their story.

Their Barolo wine “Barolo DOCG Bussia "Corsini"“ we both had on our top list when we went to try around 30 Barolo wines on the big Barolo wine fair in Castiglione Falletto last year. Later we went to do a tasting there - and the wines, the place and the people are amazing! Top score!

Bruna Grimaldi is also a producer we will recommend. Four generations wine producers, now the son and daughter working along with their parents to produce excellent wines. https://www.grimaldibruna.it/

Barbaresco

Carlo Giacosa. Fantastic wines. https://www.carlogiacosa.com/

Just by the tower of Barbaresco lies Azienda Agricola Gigi Bianco. Nice winetasting in authentic atmosphere.
